Today I spend my day at the Red Hat Open Cloud Tour, this is what happened today:

Just heard the opening by Rajiv Sodhi, who is here despite having a baby due any moment.

Margaret J. Rimmler’s keynote was interesting. One of the key takeaways being openness RedHat customers should have the choice to remain portable and replace RedHat, if that is what they want. Read the rest of this entry »

Going to a Conference?

leave a comment »

I was answering the question on ‘s answers page. It goes to why you should (not) go to conferences.

I have not visited, nor did I know of, this conference. I can however tell you that visiting a conference without having a plan or doing research makes the trip useless. Asking the question here is a good way of finding this out.

Ask yourself this:

  • Are you Buying or Selling?
  • Will you earn back the initial outlay of the conference in the next 6 months? 12 months? 18 months? Establish a time frame you could earn back the money, how close will that be to the effective time frame.
  • Will you earn it back indirectly?
  • Will you lose income by not going?

If you are buying, are you:

  • going there to buy a product? Don’t forget that you a paying to see speaker, his information/knowledge is his product.
  • going to get information about a product or service you might buy?

If you are selling, are you:

  • going to market your product or services to the participants?
  • going to sell your product or services?
  • going to do customer research?
  • going to meet customers?

I go to many IT and Telecommunication conferences because I gain knowledge. I go to others because they are of interest, although not directly applicable to my field. I almost always answer “yes” to most, if not all, of the questions above.

I hope it’s useful when you need to make a choice.

If you haven’t yet gotten your invitation code for the IBC, I still have an invite you can use. I prefer not to post it online, so please reply to this entry.

IBC 2008

This year from the 12th until the 16th of September the returns to the in Amsterdam. I missed last year’s exhibition and conference, though I’d arranged tickets for myself, so I’ve made myself a promise that I would go this year.

IBC exhibition “… showcase[s] the latest technology and foremost business ideas in broadcasting and new media.” The conference focuses particularly “… around mobile multimedia, IPTV and 4th generation communication systems. [And] events like What Caught my Eye will cover both production and mobile exhibits, and will once more be open to all.

This year I hope that they have finally implemented the 2D browsing system, similar to the iTunes interface, with live streaming in the peripheral screens on a Set-Top-Box. When I went in 2006 they (can’t remember which company) were faking it using a PC, as the current STBs didn’t have a powerful MPEGX decoder chip to be able to decode multiple streams simultaneously. They were using MPEG2, if memory serves, I’d obviously prefer MPEG4.
