Overview of Identity
There are some branches which can be added to the image below, there are Socially Validated pseudonyms, authors can have these. And the PKI version of identity can be (anonymous or pseudonym or socially validated) and verified.

So to answer Jeff Jockisch‘s question: No, there no need for every transaction to be validated by identity.

The Identity Spectrum

The Identity Spectrum gives a understanding of the different kinds of identity that are possible in digital systems. They are not exculsive – you can mix and match

Where are you on the spectrum? Do you think we still need anonymous options?

I like this a lot. We need places for privacy. Does anyone really think every transaction need be validated by identity?
