I’ve had this title in my head for about a week now, the title is naturally a portmanteaux of Malcolm Gladwell’s book title The Tipping Point and Twitter, and may be used to describe the point at which the organic growth of your twitter reach is higher than average. In 2009 the according to the Grauniad[1] people had a average of 126 followers, and this was before the exclusion of basic authentication, which was in my opinion to weed out many of the follower exchange programs.

I wouldn’t have advised somebody to use these exchange programs – though I had tried a couple in experiments and reports for customers – these programs do not promote organic growth and leave your followers list full of broken and uninteresting accounts. It may look good initially to see your follower count grow, but nothing is worse than finding out that your material is ignored by 1000 rather and being read by 20 followers who choose to follow you.

Still much can be said for the following chart which maps out Twipping Points from 100 to 500 Followers and again from 10000 to 100000. The experiments done for this don’t so much rely on organic growth and word of mouth, as on actively finding followers or reciprocal following, which for people you want following you and don’t want to follow means cluttering your follower list.

Twitter Followers

I have build up some clutter in my main Twitter account, and have been using my Twitter Lists to cut through the clutter, and I am now seeing steady gains of just over 4 followers everyday. And I have had approximately 1500 followers since the beginning of the year, at 1500 followers in 365 days = 4.1096 followers everyday. Naturally I am losing some followers too, but I can say I’ve reached my Twipping Point in 2010.

BTW, if you are looking at the anomaly in October I have yet to explain how I could win and lose 200 followers in 2 days.
