The Odessa File, by Frederick Forsyth, is another of the books I am keeping safe for my aunt. I thought I remembered seeing the movie or reading the book, but I was clearly mistaken.

The book tells the story of Peter Miller a journalist who, after the suicide of a Jewish Holocaust-survivor, discovers a diary which points to a Nazi war criminal alive and active in Germany. The war criminal was a member of the Waffen-SS and as a kamp kommandant ran a concentration camp in Riga.

I do not know the means for drawing up the indictment of an entire nation.

Peter soon discovers that Germans, rather than trying to come to terms with its troubled past, is papering the past over with guilt. An organization of former members of the SS, ODESSA, has set the war criminal up in a position of importance to further the Nazi cause and finalize the destruction of the Jews. Slowly Miller unravels the plot, and is able to keep one step ahead of an ODESSA hitman, while he himself goes undercover in ODESSA to find out the truth.

To understand everything is to forgive everything.

An exciting read, with unexpected twists.
